DESIGN OF TWO LOCAL MOSQUES IN DUBAI: BLENDING RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE WITH MODERN REQUIREMENTS
Introduction and Project Scope: Commissioned by one of our esteemed clients in Dubai, our team undertook the architectural and landscaping design for two local mosques. These projects are situated in two distinct areas, Oud Al Muteena Second (Fatma Abdulla Ahli Mosque) and Lehbab First (Amer Ghanem Ahli Mosque). The core design challenge was to understand the spiritual needs of the local community and integrate modern functional requirements with the principles of Islamic architecture. Design Challenges and Functional Requirements: The design for both mosques extended beyond the main prayer hall, incorporating several crucial service and support areas that were intelligently integrated into the complex: Imam’s Accommodation: Each mosque was required to include two separate two-bedroom residential units for the Imam and custodian These units were designed to maintain privacy while ensuring easy and segregated access to the main mosque structure and the compound. Segregated Service Areas: The design of the restrooms and ablution areas (Wudu facilities) emphasized complete gender segregation, adhering to the highest sanitary standards and optimizing user flow. Parking and Landscaping: The site design included providing ample parking space and creating beautiful, tranquil landscaping that would offer a space for contemplation while being suitable for the hot climate of Dubai.
Architectural Approach: In our design, we emphasized structural simplicity. purity of forms, and the use of natural light to create focused and spiritual environments. This approach ensured that both mosques, while respecting the heritage of religious architecture in the region, stand out as modern and highly functional structures serving the local community. The successful execution of these projects in Dubai showcases our team’s capability in managing the complexities of cultural design and meticulously integrating residential, service, and worship needs into a cohesive single development.
